A Downtown Austin First Birthday Session at Butler Park
There is something so special about celebrating a first birthday outdoors in the heart of Austin, and Butler Park is one of my favorite spots to do it. Between the open green space, skyline views, and built-in fun for little ones, it makes for a session that feels relaxed, playful, and full of personality.
If you’re looking for an Austin baby photographer who also offers outdoor milestone and first birthday sessions, this location is such a fun option for families who want something a little more natural and playful.
So Much Nature & Greenery
We started off walking around the park looking for a nice background for some birthday portraits. There is plenty of space in this park to take photos and not have a ton of people nearby.
A View That’s Always Changing
Next we headed to the top of Doug Sahm Hill Summit, where you get one of the best views of the ever-changing Austin skylineThe wide open space gives babies room to move, explore, and just be themselves. Whether they are standing, wobbling, or still crawling, it is the perfect spot for those classic “just turned one” moments.
A Little Adventure by the Pond
Next stop is the pier where babies can peek over and look for turtles. This is always a favorite. The curiosity, the pointing, the big reactions. It is such an easy way to capture genuine expressions without forcing anything.
Splash Pad Fun (and the Cutest Reactions)
Of course, we cannot skip the Liz Carpenter Splash Pad. This is where the magic happens. The water, the movement, the surprise… babies have so much fun here. Some run right in, some take their time, and some just stand there laughing at the water. Every reaction is adorable, and it makes the entire session feel easy and stress-free. This is why outdoor milestone sessions work so well. We are not trying to pose a one-year-old. We are letting them play, explore, and just be themselves.
Why This Location Works So Well
Butler Park is one of those places that just works. Everything is close together, there is so much variety, and babies genuinely enjoy being there. That means less stress for parents and more real, happy moments captured.
